Our Almshouses

Almshouses offer older persons in need the opportunity to lead independent lives in a safe, secure and supported environment.

Who can apply for almshouse accommodation?

The accommodation is for individuals over 55 years old who are in need, hardship or distress and who have been resident in the Greater London area for the past 5 years. However, preference is given to residents of the London Borough of Southwark.

What type of accommodation is it?

Almshouses contain unfurnished one bedroom flats, with lounge, separate kitchen, bathroom, double bedroom and own front door. Each almshouse has a communal laundry, a residents lounge and a guest flat for residents’ family to visit.

Would I be a tenant?

No, you would be a resident under a “license to occupy” agreement.

What support services would be provided?

A Welfare Officer is responsible for the general wellbeing of our residents, and visits regularly. In addition all flats are connected to a control centre for emergencies.

The Charity maintains the gardens and communal areas and provides a laundry for the use of residents, and carries out all repairs and maintenance work.

What bills would I have to pay?

Residents pay a Weekly Maintenance Charge (currently £150 per week) towards the running costs and upkeep of the almshouse. If you are eligible for full housing benefit or other State benefits your weekly maintenance may be met, depending on your circumstances, by the local authority.

You would be responsible for the payment of Council tax (unless exempt), and utility bills (electricity/gas). The Charity pays the water rates.

The Charity also pays for a communal TV Licence.
