We are proud to announce that Southwark Charities has reached a significant milestone in its mission to create positive social impact. Our Balance Sheet has now surpassed £100 million as a result of the Development Agreement we have entered into with JTRE London, builders of the award-winning developments – Triptych on Bankside and the Appleby Blue Almshouse for United St Saviour’s Charity.

Founded in 1717, Southwark Charities has a long and proud history of supporting older people in Southwark. Our financial stability will be in part used to more than double our stock of Almshouses, starting with our development on Blackfriars Road and later to develop our site in Walworth. The Charity has always been committed to providing affordable, long-term, secure, high-quality housing.

In celebration of this milestone, Southwark Charities is also expanding its grant programmes and enhancing its membership scheme to further support older people in need, hardship or distress in Southwark. The additional funding will allow us to provide greater financial assistance to charitable projects and organisations that align with our core values.

Increased Grant Funding
Over the next few years we aim to increase our grant-making capacity for both new and existing partners. These funds will focus on supporting initiatives that drive long-term social change, and we encourage applications from organizations working to improve the health and happiness of older people in Southwark. By expanding our grant portfolio, we aim to make a deeper, more lasting impact on the community we serve.

Enhanced Membership Scheme
Effective immediately, to further celebrate this milestone, we are also launching an enhanced membership scheme. Over 250 individuals will now benefit from our annual stipend and social activities. This new program offers exclusive benefits, including:
• Trips and Social events
• £200 annual stipend
• Opportunities to connect with other older people

Our membership scheme is integral to our vision of growing a supportive community committed to making life better for older people. Through this initiative, we hope to strengthen relationships with those who share our passion for meaningful social progress.

A Word of Gratitude
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this incredible milestone,” said CEO Chris Wilson. “Reaching £100 million on our charitable balance sheet is not just a financial achievement—it’s a testament to the collective commitment of all who believe in our mission. By increasing our housing stock, our grants and enhancing our membership scheme, we are increasing our capacity to meet the needs of the community we have served for over 300 years and ensuring our long-term future.”

Looking Ahead
As we move forward, Southwark Charities remains committed to growing our impact and expanding our reach. We look forward to working with current and new partners to continue addressing the most pressing challenges of our time. Our ambition is to ensure that every pound we manage is used to make a tangible difference where it is needed most.
